Health and Beauty

Even though the major occupation of women in the earlier 20th century and previous was that of wife, mother, and homemaker that never deterred women from doing what was necessary to look their best.

The ads showing women mopping floors and cleaning bathtubs while in high heels with perfect manicures and pearls may have been a bit over the top but if you look at vintage pictures from the 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s you will notice that a woman never left the home without gloves, a hat with a plume and their hair done.

Here are some interesting

Skin

There was a lot of advice during the 50’s on how to have the lovely skin of the movie starlets.

  • Palmolive suggested washing the face with their lovely green bar 3x for beautiful skin. The directions were to lather up with the soap, rinse with warm water and then with cool.

Body

Lest ye think that corsets went away with the Victorian ere women well into the 1960’s would not leave the home without their girlde on. These wonder pieces promised to flatten your tummy, slim you and support your body muscles all whilst being comfortable!

A 1903 Ladie’s World magazine held ads for such items as the the R&G Corset No. 837. This piece was desirable for it’s straight front, low-bust and deep-hip style. If you’v seen this particular style from the turn of the century you will know now what gave women that extreme letter S shape where it looked as if they would tip over onto the street.
